It is often useful to have installed never versions of the compiler in our systems as they often provide better performance and extended features, such as support for newer language features and better debugging information. In the case of ubuntu the new GCC stable packages can be obtained from the Ubuntu Toolchain PPA. Ubuntu Touch is a mobile version of the Ubuntu operating system for mobile devices. However, unlike other 'flavors' of Ubuntu, it is more accurately an extract of parts of Ubuntu. It is adapted to run naturally in a mobile, touch-screen environment but is also capable of functioning as a desktop computer while in 'desktop mode'. Up to 2014 there had been two Linux Mint releases per year, about one month after the Ubuntu releases they were based on. Each release was given a new version number and a code name, using a female first name starting with the letter whose alphabetical index corresponds to the version number and ending with the letter 'a' (e.g., 'Elyssa' for version 5, 'Felicia' for version 6). While Debian testing and unstable are continuously updated until they become the next stable version. Ubuntu is released in a gap of 6 months, and the gap is 2 years for LTS releases. Ubuntu LTS has a incredibly long support time, around 5 year or even more.
Ubuntu is distributed on two types of images described below.
Desktop image
The desktop image allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later. This type of image is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 384MiB of RAM to install from this image.
64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop imageChoose this if you have a computer based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2). Choose this if you are at all unsure.
32-bit PC (i386) desktop imageFor almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors.
Server install image
The server install image allows you to install Ubuntu permanently on a computer for use as a server. It will not install a graphical user interface.
64-bit PC (AMD64) server install imageChoose this if you have a computer based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2). Choose this if you are at all unsure.
32-bit PC (i386) server install imageFor almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors.
For ARM hardware for which we do not ship preinstalled images, see ARM/Server/Install for detailed installation information.
